Genuine Seymour Duncan Custom Shop "SSL-1C DG" hand
scatter-wound pickup.
In 1979 Seymour
Duncan custom wound this pickup for David
Gilmour to install in his black Strat® because he
required a hotter bridge pickup, one with more
output, sustain and richer harmonics.
In the original SSL-1C DG pickup design there
are no hum cancelling capabilities in
Gilmour's Black
Strat®. So we have requested a unique change to the
original SSL-1C DG design and Seymour Duncan's
Custom Shop has
reversed the winding direction and reversed the polarity of the pole pieces
to North up. With this
Rw/Rp design this pickup is specifically intended to be
installed with two regular wound Fender® Custom
Shop pickups to give you two pickup selection
positions of hum cancelling.
Now you can have a Black Strat® with hum cancelling
when the bridge and middle pickups are selected
together and when the bridge and neck pickups
are selected together via the recessed
mini-toggle switch.
Each of these pickups is hand scatter-wound and
signed by "MJ" (Maricela Juarez) of Seymour Duncan's custom shop.
They have vintage staggered, beveled Alnico V
pole pieces, cloth insulated 22 gauge yellow and
black hook-up leads which denote this pickups
unique Rw/Rp design, keyed black bottom flat
work stamped with "SSL-1C DG" and "RP". Coil
windings are wrapped with cloth tape.
We have compiled a detailed information page
specifically about our two Seymour Duncan Custom
Shop SSL-1C DG pickups,

Includes a white pickup cover,
nickel plated Phillips round head mounting screws
and two rubber surgical tubing
pieces.

With
this specific SSL-1C DG Rw/Rp (Reverse Wind / Reverse Polarity) design, this pickup
is intended to be installed with two Fender® Custom Shop pickups (Fat 50 in the neck, Custom '69
in the middle) which are both clock-wise wound
and South up on the pole pieces and you DO NOT need to reverse any of
the hook-up leads of any of these pickups to have them in phase
with one another. All pickups should have
their black wires connected to ground and the
white wires to the selector switch (yellow wire
with this pickup).
If you are installing different pickups in the
neck and middle, please reference the winding
direction of the other pickups and the polarity
orientation of the
pole pieces in relation to one another and hook
up accordingly to ensure correct phasing. One
needs to
understand winding direction of the
coil and the polarity orientation of the pole pieces to
correctly install with other pickups.
